Synopsis

After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.
Now, it’s the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth’s last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie’s only hope for rescuing her brother-or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.

REVIEW

This book was EPIC!

This book was actually my first alien book and I really enjoyed it. Rick Yancey really has a way with words that I can’t really describe but his writing is really short and straight-forward and he uses a lot of metaphors and similes and it just creates amazing visuals in my mind. This was one of my favourite excerpts from the book because it was just so well written.

“You feel warm all over. There’s no pain, none at all. You’re all floaty, like you just chugged a whole bottle of cough syrup. The white world wraps its white arms around you and carries you downward into a frosty white sea.

And the silence so—shit—silent, that the beating of your heart is the only sound in the universe. So quiet, your thoughts make a whispery noise in the dull, freezing air.”

I thought it was really cool how he split the book into different parts and he switched between different POV and it was really important to have those different views because they were all experiencing different things so we got to see the whole story. But as well as many great books that switch POV frequently, you get confused about who’s talking and there was a couple times when I realised in the middle of chapter that someone else was talking and had to backtrack to the beginning of the chapter to understand what was happening. I don’t know maybe it’s just me.

Some people said that the love story was too insta-lovey but to be honest, I really needed that boost in the romance department and she’s obviously been deprived of love and seriously who could resist a seriously hot guy even if he’s a bit suspicious and all but STILL he was the first person she talked to in AGES. JUST LET THEM BE HAPPY WITH EACH OTHER! It’s basically the end of the world and its not like she’s going all out because the love story could’ve been way worse- she still questioned him and restricted herself and what not. And as unrealistic as a romantic development in the middle of an alien invasion may be… It was entertaining nevertheless and I loved their relationship! Who cares! I loved them together and whether it was too Insta-lovey or not, they are beautiful together (especially after they figured out their problems…)

This quote made me feel like jelly:

“What?” Smiling that damned lopsided, sexy grin, shoulders up, hands stuffed deep in his pockets with a sort of aw-shucks attitude, which I guess is meant to drive me the good kind of crazy. What is it about him that makes me want to slap him and kiss him, run from him and to him, throw my arms around him and knee him in the balls, all at the same time?”

Overall, I seriously enjoyed this book and it has made me more open to reading more alien-sci-fi-themed books. I gave it a 4.5 out of 5 because I really enjoyed it but it wasn’t so good that it would deserve a perfect 5/5. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a sci-fi, alien-themed, action, adventure, book with some romance of course. Please read it!!
